Sustainability

We care deeply about the impacts the Mill and our business have on the natural environment and wish to tread lightly. These are the things we have done so far to make a difference to how we live here

Energy and water use

Littleton Mill is one of the most environmentally sustainable houses in the UK. It is run entirely on renewable energy created from a hydroelectric turbine and biomass (wood pellet) boiler. Most of the energy we generate here is exported to the grid, swhich makes us more than carbon neutral - we are carbon positive!

Although we have a lot of clean energy we still aim to reduce our energy use. Our property is heavily insulated to improve its thermal efficiency and we have LEDs and low energy lights, water saving devices, such as low flush WCs and water efficient showers, and policies and practices to encourage guests to minimise their use of energy and water during retreats.

Biodiversity

The grounds and gardens at Littleton Mill are a haven for wildlife and our approach to maintaining the land aims to promote and protect this biodiversity. We do not use chemical fertilisers or weed killers that can pollute land or water courses. This is because we are trying to keep numerous local inhabitants happy including a number of deer, an owl, a hare, an otter and a kingfisher to name but a few.

Sourcing

We endeavour to source all the food and drink we use on the retreats from local and organicsuppliers. We only use natural and sustainable products throughout the house and avoid the use of harmful chemical cleaners and beauty products.

Transport

We strongly encourage guests to travel to us using public transport. We offer free transport from the station to the Mill for those that choose this option. Guests are also encouraged to car share where possible. Our own transport impacts are still an issue however, and we are looking into ways to improve this.
